Reset Your Stress Button

If your life is anything like mine, I know you’ve got a lot on your plate. Between a quickly-approaching deadline for my new book, Reclaim the Magic, dealing with the daily challenges that come with building a new home, producing monthly materials for my Millionaire Smarts® Coaching Program, running my multiple coaching groups, and keeping up with the dozens of other projects we have going on at my office, sometimes it gets a little overwhelming and leaves my head spinning. Quite frankly, sometimes it can be overwhelming, and I know you can relate. We’re all bombarded these days with so many things to be done between work and family and sometimes it’s hard to live a balanced and successful life.

I wanted to share with you that sometimes even the best of us (yes, you) need to retreat to refocus our thoughts, energies, and resources. With all that’s going on in my life and business, I have to take the time to remind myself that being in a bad mood is a choice, and that I can choose to look at my life and situation differently.

When you realize that you are experiencing burnout from the reality of life, it’s time for you to have what I like to call “the skill of awareness.” What this means is that you have to have an awareness that you are not in a resourceful mindset or mental state. You need to give yourself permission to nurture yourself and honor your emotions.

It’s important to grasp the concept that feelings are energy and they need to be acknowledged. The more you deny your feelings, the more they will push for recognition. There is value in understanding that there is an important difference between owning your negative feelings and focusing on them.

Do yourself a big favor and create an outlet that allows you to get out of your negative state of mind and honor your feelings. I will share with you that I love movies! I love going to the theater and getting popcorn and a drink and sitting there in the dark. I allow my own life to go into the background and set aside reality for a short time while I get into the movie. I always pre-frame myself that I am watching a movie and it’s not real but I give myself permission to be as involved in the movie as possible.

I tell you this because some days when I think I might really do something stupid, like lose my temper, I ask myself: how can I escape and take two hours off and reset my emotional button? One way I can reset my stress level is to play hooky and go to the movies. There are days my schedule will not allow that, but I find that when I do let my kid come out to play, I can disappear for a couple of hours from my office and when I come back I am refreshed and balanced. Now of course, this is not a solution I can use on a weekly basis but when I do use it, I always feel better and can be more productive.

When I can’t get away for two hours, I will often go take a walk and get into nature. Other beneficial outlets are nurturing activities such as reading or listening to uplifting books, CDs or DVDs. Activities like fishing, bubble baths, walking, and meditation make you feel good and give you some relief from the stress that is emotionally overwhelming to you. There are many things we can do as entrepreneurs but first, you have to give yourself permission to accept the idea that life is not all work. You need to reset your stress button to be able to be creative, productive, and successful.

5 Kinds of Currencies

I just came home from presenting a two-day coaching group which focuses on business mindset and performance. On my way home, I was presented with many weather-related travel challenges. My flights were delayed, rerouted, and incredibly challenging. Almost everyone on my flights were unhappy and frustrated at the unavoidable circumstances. A couple of times, I was tempted to let the circumstances rule me instead of me controlling my reaction to them. My secret? I understand that everything is made of energy and that the only power I have is internal. Instead of losing my cool like most of the people around me, I chose to focus on using my real power—my life energy—in the most beneficial way possible. I stayed calm and centered despite all of the chaos around me, which allowed me to be present and listen to my intuition to make good choices to get home. Think about it: when we’re stressed out and become victims to reality, we pay a much bigger price than when we are conscious of our thoughts and how they affect us.

You need to understand that you have five kinds of life currency: financial, mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual energy and like money, you spend it every day. Most people never think about how they spend their energy and at the end of the day, they haven’t managed their energy and have run out. They don’t have any left to do the extra things they want to do. One of the most important things you can do every day is make sure you guard your life currency like you do your money!

You may have never paid attention to the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that have drained your time and energy, but feelings of anxiety or unnecessary worry, fears, doubts, and old grudges take up ENERGY. Since you only have so much financial, mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual energy, you certainly don’t want to waste it in directions that don’t serve you or your intentions for your business and life.

Only when you’re at the top of your game can you be resourceful, creative, brilliant, and effective. We all know this, but before we know it, we somehow allow “stuff” to get us off balance. These Leaks and Vampires cause us to get out of integrity with our intentions, and throw us into a tailspin feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, angry, and dissatisfied in life and business.

The secret is to be aware and conscious of when you start to experience any self-defeating thoughts or behaviors that are out of integrity with your real purpose in life. After all, how we spend our five types of energy determines how much money we make and how successful we are in all areas of our lives.

It’s Time to Celebrate!

I can’t believe how time has flown! I’m excited to share with you that I’ve just celebrated the 11th anniversary of my Millionaire Smarts® Coaching Program, which is my done-for-you add-on coaching program.

I started the program in 2003 at Dan Kennedy’s urging. As Dan put it, “Most coaches provide the mechanics – how to advertise, how to market, how to sell, how to manage, and the tools to do those things with, but all the tools are useless to people insufficiently motivated to use them.” And that’s where I came in… My focus has been to bridge the gap between knowing and doing, to provide members with right thinking, accountability, motivation, and information to help them achieve the next level in their success.

I’ve worked hard over the last 11 years to provide timely, relevant, and inspiring monthly materials to my clients, many of whom have been with my program since the very beginning. I’ve covered a variety of topics related to entrepreneurial mindset & success, and have had the pleasure of interviewing celebrity guests like Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, Brian Tracy, Les Brown, Loral Langemeier, Dr. Joe Vitale, Dr. Gene Landrum, Dan Kennedy, the Late Art Linkletter, and so many more. I have been most honored to have had the opportunity to interview so many famous and knowledgeable experts and authors for the program.

It’s been a wild ride, to say the least. As you can imagine, I’ve had some “entertaining” experiences while producing my Monthly programs. There have been times when Murphy’s Law was alive and well…while I was interviewing the Late Art Linkletter, my office was being painted. Of course, the show had to go on so we moved all of the recording equipment into the hallway and proceeded as if were a normal day.

I have also had the pleasure of interviewing wild men like Dr. Gene Landrum and Marketing Guru Dan Kennedy many times, who are both certainly the embodiment of true Genius.

The greatest thing about the entire program is the thrill of the audience sharing with me how much they enjoy, are entertained, and learn from the program! I cherish the personal notes, emails, and cards I’ve gotten over the years from the listeners and subscribers of this program.

My mission in life is to uplift people, and this program has allowed me to fulfill that desire. We all need some positive, uplifting messages, and assistance to cut our learning curves to break the pattern of the often dark and depressing news we’re bombarded with on a daily basis.

It’s amazing to me to think about how the program has grown since its inception, starting with a few clients here and there, to now being distributed all over the world…to the UK, Australia, All over North America, and Japan. I’m proud to know that the work I’ve done has had such a positive impact on the lives of so many. I hope to be able to continue helping people break free of their limiting beliefs for the next 11 years.
