Creative Goal Maps

Ever get tired of creating goals with lists? Do you ever feel goal setting is a chore?

I recently set up a new Coaching Client and during the process of starting sessions, I ask for a great deal of background as well as information on where they want to go and what they’d like to achieve by the end of our coaching sessions.

Typically, clients send me letters and lists, but to my delight and surprise he sent me a map of where he is and where he wants to go. I was totally impressed since I am a visual learner.

Let’s face it, most of us use lists for organizing our day and setting priorities! We write list after list and most of them, despite our good intentions, go undone because we are not inspired to take action.

Lists are good for implementation but not so good for creative thoughts to transform your life or business.

So instead of writing out your goals for the future, how about trying something new?

So here is a suggestion to jump start your creative juices. Instead of your normal list making (which by now is boring to you), let’s shake things up in your brain and try drawing a map. (Don’t worry, you’re the only person who will see it; your map doesn’t have to be pretty).

Start at the center of a sheet of paper with your challenge, problem, or situation you want solutions for.

Now all you have to do is start writing ideas around the central point of your map. Draw similar thoughts near each other and after working on these for a while, step back from the map and ask yourself what the connections are between these separate thoughts or ideas.

What will surprise you is that you will find there are themes and links you might not have expected to show up. By putting these links together you can come up with new approach that a straight-line list making strategy could not have shown you.

Here’s another suggestion for your map: if you can create small icons or pictures of your goals, you will find that, while reviewing your pictures, you will see how many of your ideas are linked together!

For creative thinking, you also might want to take this process outside in nature where you leave behind your cell phone and computer, and where you can actually get some relief from the relentless calls with other people’s needs and wants. Give yourself permission to actually ask yourself the question: What do I really want to create?

The truth is that most people just react to life. They don’t actually create a plan and then work the plan!

So if you have new goals, one of the first things you should do is get a support system. I have created a wonderful support system called: Overcoming Unproductive Behaviors.

It’s for people who have big ambitions, people who are creators and movers and shakers of the world. We all need coaches and systems to keep our talents, life energy, and focus on track.

Please check out the Unproductive Behaviors System. This system will assist you to create NEW GOALS AND PLANS to take the place of your old unproductive behaviors! Keep reading on the right column for more.

Are You Having Fun at Work?

Not too long ago I was at Joe’s Crab Shack and I don’t know if you’ve ever been, but about every hour or so, the entire wait staff goes to the middle of the restaurant and does a dance, whether it’s the YMCA, electric slide, or cupid shuffle. I thought to myself, my, not only is it entertaining, but what a great way to stay energized throughout the shift…I was telling my office staff about it, and they decided to adopt their own way of energizing themselves with a mid-day dance party behind closed doors, with music of their choice… So, mid-afternoon every day I hear about 3 minutes of music and I know they are blowing off steam and having some fun. Yes, it sounds silly but the truth is, we all need a little silly to keep us sane. A lot of times, my folks are working on computers and even though we have techniques we use to stay on point and focused, this is a fun way to break the day up and keep it lively. (And it doesn’t take long). What I really love about this is it brings out the “Kid” in them and they are more creative and actually love working with me!

I know we all work really hard and sometimes get stressed. Here are some of the other techniques we use to increase concentration and creativity, or if we’re “stuck” on something:

  1. Take a five-minute brisk walk. Walking is physical activity that stimulates circulation and is a change of pace for quiet concentration and it activates other parts of your brain for problem solving. Plus walking works off frustration and pounds.
  2. Do some active relaxation. (You should set side just a few minutes a day to really relax to keep yourself creative with clear thinking.)
  3. Practice “focused thinking.” This is a way of centering your mind actively on your work. When your mind wanders, grab it and drag it back to the topic at hand. Don’t give in an inch. You may find this focused thinking brutally difficult at first, but soon your mind will adjust.

So really, there are two lessons here:

  1. What are we seeing in our environment that we can use to benefit ourselves and staff in our businesses? (Like the dance party idea…not only is it a fun stress-reducer, but it keeps our energy up)
  2. What are you doing as the role model (leader) in your business and to your kids to support and nurture your life and business? If other people who you influence observe you doing fun and stress-relieving things, you will be enhancing the quality of their lives as well as yours.

You should give it a try—you never know what creative brainstorm idea will emerge because you’re having fun!!!

Purge What Doesn’t Serve You

Purge What Doesn’t Serve You

Hi from Lee! Let me ask you: do you feel like you’re always behind because you’re burdened with too much to do? Are there people, activities, and commitments that are draining you?

I know I feel that way sometimes. I have so much going on this year that when even the little things go wrong, it can seem like too much. When this happens, it means that there are too many things taking your life energy, and you’re depleted.

Each year that passes expects more and more from us. My solution to handle this is to cut away some of the time-sucking activities and energy-draining people.

This means that I’m consciously deciding to RELEASE some old relationships in both business and my personal life that are no longer rewarding and beneficial to me. This will make room for new energy to come into my life. We can’t hold on to things that aren’t working for us and expect new and better things to come into our lives.

If you haven’t thought about purging some things and people this year, maybe now is the time to consider it. Think about the people, things, and activities that take up space in your life. How do you feel about them? What things can you purge to make your life easier?

For example, I’m releasing “friends” on Facebook who aren’t actually my friends and who constantly bombard me with requests. I’m releasing newsletter subscriptions that I no longer use or don’t know how I got on, and projects and clients that are not beneficial to me or my business.

If you have “friends” who drain you or don’t honor your time and energy, it’s time to re-evaluate the relationship and focus that energy on yourself and your business. Ask yourself: “how does it FEEL to have this person’s energy in my space?” If the answer is not a positive one, gently release them and make room for incredible people to enter.

If you have stuff cluttering your office or home, donate it so it can be put to good use. I recently donated tons of stuff that I simply wasn’t using anymore, and it felt great to do so.

Ask yourself how you can streamline your business. If you’ve committed to projects that aren’t really working out, it’s time to focus on those that will be profitable for you. If you have vendors who have gone to sleep on the job, it’s time to replace them. If you have staff members who aren’t productive, it’s time to re-evaluate their employment, whether they need to be replaced or trained better. Are there new systems you can put in place to increase productivity and profits? (By the way, if you’re having staff challenges or need help with hiring staff who can help free you up and make more money in your business, click here to check out My Complete Entrepreneurial Assistant’s Training and Motivation System).

The real question is this: What things can you do to make your life happier, easier, and more effective, and keep you from feeling like you’re behind and burdened with too much to do?

Take the time to evaluate your life and business because the truth will set you free!! What are you willing to give up to make this year a better year for you?

Are You Getting What You Want in Life?

Hi from Lee. I want to take some time today to remind you of the power of your mind in assisting you to create exactly what you want and need in your life. The best way to prepare for anything in life is to imagine success (the end result). You can also use this same powerful tool to get rid of any bad habits. For example: You can release your desire to eat things that are not for your best good, you can release the desire to enact on old habits that have needlessly caused you pain, money, and suffering by simply deciding to use your most powerful inner tool, your mind

Your imagination is your own personal workshop of the mind. In it, you can see all the possibilities of the future and exactly how to go about creating those dreams. You can rehearse the possibilities, create plans, and mentally rehearse ways to succeed, all in the privacy of your mind. WE are Self-Fulfilling Prophecies in what we think about ourselves. It pays for us to think positive thoughts about our future.

Mental rehearsal is using the mind to create a better existence. This tool has actually been known, used, and explored since the beginning of time. The Roman Philosopher Marcus Aurelius said, Our life is what our thoughts make it. Walt Disney said, If you can dream it, you can do it. Everything we create in the physical world starts as an idea.

Today, a growing variety of people use this powerful tool to create better lives for themselves. Business people, athletes, teachers, physicians, psychotherapists, and even dieters find mental rehearsal to be very powerful. The mind is far more resourceful and complicated than we have ever recognized. Winston Churchill said, “The empires of the future are the empires of the mind.”

We are always creating our reality from our thoughts. Our thoughts act like blueprints of the image we want to create. The image magnetizes and guides physical energy to flow into the form we have imagined, and allows us to manifest our desires into reality. This is simply the principle that as you sow, so shall you reap, in your thoughts and in your life. We always attract into our lives whatever we strongly believe, think about, or imagine most vividly.
